Mount Batur — Gunung Batur in Indonesian — last erupted in 2000, yet its summit reaches only 1,717 metres, modest for a volcano that hollowed out one of Southeast Asia's largest calderas. Volcanological records list more than twenty eruptive episodes since 1804, among them 1849, 1888, 1904, 1963, 1974 and 1994. Two catastrophic eruptions, roughly 29,300 and 20,150 years ago, emptied the magma chamber beneath northeastern Bali. The roof collapsed twice, leaving a double caldera measuring about 13.8 by 10 kilometres. Lake Batur, crescent-shaped and the largest lake on the island, fills the eastern floor. The cone that draws visitors today is a young intruder, built inside the ruin of a far older mountain. Its flanks are still raw. Nothing has had time to soften them. The mountain's recorded history is a history of relocation. Eruptions in 1917 killed more than a thousand people and levelled the village of Batur. The survivors rebuilt on the same ground. Lava in 1926 buried the settlement again, stopping short of the shrine of Pura Ulun Danu Batur, which villagers dismantled and carried up to the caldera rim at Kalanganyar. The temple stands there still, one of Bali's directional sanctuaries. In 2012 UNESCO inscribed it within the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, the listing that recognises subak, the thousand-year-old irrigation democracy that treats the lake as its source.
